I got an ADT alarm system installed in my condo when I moved into it a
bit over a year ago - seemed like a good idea for a single female.
Recently, I got engaged and married and sold the condo. I'm now told
that I signed a 3-year contract (I surely don't remember that being
pointed out to me at the time I signed it - granted I should have read
every freaking word but I didn't) and now it will cost me hundreds or
thousands of dollars to cancel the contract $576.84 to ADT and I think
at least $1000 to the monitoring company that installed the
equipment). I'll never use their service again.

That's crazy. According the terms of the contract, it is illegal for you to
MOVE. I'd probably take it to small claims court. While I can already hear
someone screaming that you signed a contract and so you are screwed . . .
there's no way this contract could be legal. (People move all the time, so
there MUST be a provision for this in the contract other than abusive
early-termination fees.) Illegal contracts (or clauses) can not be
enforced. Fight it. -Dave

No, according to the contract, she has to pay termination fees.
Since when is that illegal?

The OP probably got in on a deal where there would be "free"
installation and/or equipment if she signed a 36 month contract.
The monthly fees then bundle in the cost of the installation
and equipment over the life of the contract. If the OP
decides to bail, then the vendor has essentially lost all
the value of the labor and equipment, and it has to be made
up in the termination fees. That's standard, and
makes perfect sense to anyone who isn't a whiney
entitlement-minded twit who simply wants to back out of
a contract whenever they find they're actually going
to be held responsible for maintaining their end
of the deal.

No stupid. It is not "illegal" to move. You do however have to
continue to pay your contract, or pay to exit it. You can move
wherever you want. Can the condo buyer assume the contract? If you
went to court, what would your claim be, "I signed a contract with
termination charges if I cancelled before 3 years, now I don't want to
be held to it".
No, I am NOT any fan of ADT.
There are a lot of consumer complaints about them. But what do you
expect, its just TANSTAAFL. People are greedy for that "free" system,
so they sign up for multiyear contracts to get it, and then change
their plans and then are irate to be stuck with the contract they
signed.
Its not much different from somebody signing a 2-year cell phone
contract and then bitching about the termination fee when they want to
switch companies 6 months later.
DO NOT EVER USE ADT. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING.
OP, consider this a closing cost to you on the sale.

God forbid that you do what you said you'd do. Why, the
next thing you know you'll be expected to pay your rent
and mortage, just because you said you would.
