Howdy!

I recently installed an American Standard toilet model Champion, which
claims to be very effective flushing with few water.

That thing is very loud.   That is, the person flushing does not hear
a big noise but anyone in the floor below the bathroom hears a big
"thump" as if the water was ramming against the flush valve.    I
noticed they replaced the traditional flapper by a different system
that actually behaves like a ram.

The manual does not mention any adjustments in that thing and I went
back to Home Depot where the folks also did not know what to do.   The
old toilet was very quiet but is no longer serviceable.   Therefore, I
am sure there must be a good brand out there or a way to reduce that
noise.

So, the questions are:
1) anyone knows how to adjust that thing, if possible, to reduce that
noise.
2) or, if not possible, does anyone know of any brand that is not so
lame?

I am close to throw that thing away...

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you bought a toilet with a pressure-assisted flush.  Yes,
they're noisy.  If that's not what you wanted, maybe you should pull it
out and install a different toilet, without the pressure-assisted flush,
instead.  You should be able to find some reviews in Consumer Reports,
etc, if not online.  IIRC, anecdotal evidence is that Toto toilets flush
well even without the pressure assist.

Other buyers have reported the same noise problem
(http://terrylove.com/forums/showthread.php?tH33&highlight=champion+review ).

For a lineup of low flow toilets, see http://www.terrylove.com/crtoilet.htm  ;
there are also several other information links on the page, as well as links to
descriptions and reviews of each one.

I bought a pair of Toto Drake ADA height toilets for my house a few years ago.
I am VERY happy with them -- quiet, and not even one double-flush required yet!
It appears the Drake is the 2-piece version of the Ultramax.  Also, the tank is
more compact than many older toilets, so the long bowl model fits in very
little more space than old round bowl models (one of mine is in a very small
space, and it fits fine).

FWIW, I've had this toilet installed in my kids' bathroom for over 3 years
and have had no noise or leaking issues.

I've had one (the comfort height model) installed in my bathroom for about a
year now and have no complaints about the noise.  Then again, I live alone and
couldn't care less.  My father came to visit and made a comment about the noise
but frankly, I think it was more the relative explosiveness of the sound rather
than the volume that bothered him.

Now what I do like about it is I never have to flush twice.... ever.  But if I
did, there's enough water in the tank to offer two immediate flushes without
having to wait.

If you really don't like the Champion, I'll take it.  I've got an upstairs
bathroom that has an old style Gerber toilet that doesn't flush nearly as well
that I'm thinking about upgrading.
