I have very hard water in my house, so I started doing some research
on possibly installing a whole house water softener.  I rapidly
stubbled upon magnetic water softeners, which claim to soften water
without the use of any chemicals or plumbing modifications.  My
question is:  Do these magnetic water softeners really work?  If so
which brands/models are recommended?  Thanks!

Can you think of any reason why they might?

They work great if your main problem is chunks of iron in your water.

Yes. They work very well at separating people who are unable to manage money
from the excess funds in their bank acounts. Do realize the kind of damage those
people could do to themselves and others around them?

If it sounds to good to be true, it probably is. The only chemicals in a
water softener is salt.
