Dog Urine Stains in Carpet

 Hi Folks!

Does anyone have an effective way of cleaning old dog urine stains from
carpets. I've tried at least 5 different brands that guarantee they remove
both stains and odour, and they do neither. The stains were usually dry by
the time I saw them. I also have stains that I've cleaned, but still show
yellow (on pink carpeting).

I don't think there *is* a way to clean pet urine stains from carpet.
You need to replace the carpet, the padding, and possibly the subfloor
as well....  or the smell will just keep coming back.

Having a lot of foster dogs pass thru my house, I have more experience
with this than I like.  The staining may be permanent.  Here is what I
do:  You need a wet/dry shopvac.  The 6 or 8 gal size is most
convenient.  The 1 1/4 inch hose and attachments are easier to handle and
clean than the 2 1/2 inch hose.

0) if not already empty, empty any dirt from vacuum.
1) vac up the pee.  If its dry already, skip this step.
2) pour on water liberally.  Set soak in.  Vaccuum up.
3) repeat #2.
4) Pour on white vinegar liberally.  I get it for aprox $1.25/gal at sams club.
5) Wait about 10 minutes.
6) Vacuum up the vinegar.

After a few such uses, clean the vacuum.  What I do is:

1) rinse hose in bathtub.  Hang up to drain.
2) Pour liquid into toilet.
3) Rinse filter in bathtub.  Remove filter from vac and set aside to dry.
4) Rinse tank in tub, pour water into toilet.  Repeat as needed.

I use the cleanstream filters which last much longer than the paper
filters that are standard.  Allow to dry between uses.  I have several
that I rotate to allow time to dry.
