Has anyone had experiences with estate sales?  That is, where you hire
some company to sell the contents of an entire house (or as much as
possible) because the owner has died or because you are moving to
another state and don't want to cart all your old stuff with you, or
similar reasons.  What percentage do they typically charge and is
there anything to watch out for in them?  I live in New Jersey but am
looking to move to another state because the taxes are so outrageous
here and I can't afford them in retirement.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

On Tue, 29 Sep 2009 10:00:11 -0700 (PDT), against all advice,

When I moved, I was going to a house that was much smaller than
the one I was leaving.  I contacted an auction house.

They sent two men with a truck and a trailer.  They loaded the
vehicles, took my stuff to their auction site, stored it until
the sale.  Then they presented it for sale, collected the funds,
and disposed of items for which there was no bid.

They charged me thirty percent of what they had collected.  When
I consider how much of a pain in the ass it would have been for
me to sell all that stuff myself at a garage sale or something, I
thought it was one hell of a deal.

I'd do it again.
