Hi,

I have a In-Sink-Erator Model 77 which has a very loose shredder
plate.  I am wondering if this can be easily replaced
(In-Sink-Erator's site is not particularly helpful on parts or
anything with regards to trouble), or is it time to get a new one?  I
think it's approximately 20+ years old, given a big fancy 50th
Anniversary on it (The company was founded in 1927).

Many thanks in advance!

Sincerely,
Kai

"77" is only part of the model number it should be 77-##. There should be a
foil tag on the side or bottom of the unit with the whole model number and
serial number.

You mean the 'knuckles' (for lack of a better word) are loose on the
"rotating shredder"? (rotating shredder is the actual part name BTW)

It can be replaced but not usually "easily". There are special tools used to
separate the 2 halves of the disposal (although it can sometimes be done
with a mallet and chisel). The seal beneath should also be replaced whenever
the rotating shredder is removed.

The stationary shredder (outer grinding ring which has the grinding teeth)
may also need to be replaced if the 'knuckles' have been grinding against it
for too long.

The company at the following link can get any ISE parts which are still
available. You'll have to contact them however, as ISE models are not listed
in their on-line catalog.

That is a higher end model and may be worth repairing if only the rotating
shredder and seal needs to be replaced. If the stationary shredder is also
needed, a new one might me more cost effective but you can price them to see
for for sure.

BTW. If you buy a comparable model also made by ISE, you may not need to
alter the drain connection or change the mounting collar to install it which
saves some hassle. You can see what brand names ISE makes products under in
the "Who make what" page of the 'Repair Parts' section of my site linked
below.
