hopefully this will add onto the thread I started awhile ago-
I bought - er, rather, my husband bought the Sanyo I mentioned. My 3
yo loves it. It works ok, but the Miele is definetly better. It has
better suction, I think. It works better on hard floors than the
Sanyo too- oh well.
since someone mentioned shop-vacs, I have a Craftsman that my mom
bought for me several years ago and I recently replaced the wands and
attachments. It's a big thing- 16 gallons or something ridiculous
like that, but boy does it suck! After my garage sale next week, I
hope do paint the interior of the garage and seal the floor so I've
been vacuuming out there more often than I generally would and have
thought about taking it into teh house too. :-)
just FWIW...

I also have an older 16 gal craftsman vac, but I would not recommend
using it in the house. Its too big and clumsy. I use an 8 gal
shop-vac in the house for bare floors and corners and ceiling cobwebs
etc etc. I have found that the 1 1/4 inch hose and accessories are much
easier to handle than the 2 1/2 hose on the 16 gal.

There are adapters to use the 1.25" hoses on the larger vacs.
There are new Ridgid 16 gal shop vacs that are QUIET!
I was in a store and thought the fellow was using a central vac
because all I heard was the whooshing of the air.
It was a reasonably new Ridgid 16 gal wet/dry vac with the
2.5" hoses and tubes and all.
Nothing escaped the power! Dropped candy, wrappers, papers
were all slurped up without clogging.

I bought a Eureka Boss 2 years ago ($65.00) and couldn't be happier,
but that's only because I use a shop vac for floorboards, couches,
cars, etc. The onboard extensions on my Eureka hardly pick up at all.
I like the fact that if I kill this vacuum, I can run to the store and
replace it for under $80.00, and it's done well so far for 2 years
with 4 dalmatians (short hair, but MAN do they shed!)

Believe it or not, I still have a Hoover "Constellation" that still works.
It's the one that is globe-shaped. It was given to me at least 30 years ago and
I'm sure that it was at least 20 years old then. And I inherited a "Royal"
that's
even older than that.
OTOH, I have had "Shop Vac" brand vac that died withing two years.
My whole house vac is a Broan, about 15 years old and it's been trouble-free.
