Remar Sutton seems to have done a good job of exposing the usual scams
pulled by car seller on their customers. Is there any similar
information out there on how to avoid unnecessary costs when buying
homeowners insurance? I'm not saying insurance agents are dishonest,
but I'm quite sure there are ways to avoid buying insurance you don't
need.

I always look at homeowners insurance as being for *major* things only.
Therefore I have a very high deductible and this saves me a lot of money.
Also I have replacement cost.
So say a tree falls on my house and it will cost $1,000.00 to fix it. - I
will pay that myself and not make a claim.
Say I have a fire and my house burns to the ground. - Then I'll make a
claim.
It does not pay to have small claims covered and then make a lot of small
claims. They will increase your insurance rates. So best to *not* make
small claims and if doing that, might as well have a high deductible and
save money.
Other than that, go to different insurance companies in your area and talk
to the "claims adjuster" about what policies are best (these are the people
who pay the claims). Some of these people are real jerks. Avoid those
companies. If you find one who is friendly and helpful, go with that
company.
