My crappy Goldstar dehumidifier just died after two years of minimal use. I
replaced the motor and
it still is garbage. I am looking to replace it for my finished basement (approx
800 sq/ft). I am
looking at the Frigidaire and Kenmore models (both 70 pint). THey sell for $239
each. What are you
all using? I want a "real" name and not another Goldstar or off brand name.
Thanks for any
suggestions.

Just be careful not to buy one that's manufactured by LG.
I had a GE one, several years old, that was actually under recall in
summer 2007. I spent literally months on the phone with LG, because
they had manufactured the GE-brand dehumidifier. LG kept promising to
issue a repair order but not doing it. And their lies were insulting:
at one point they told me to expect a call from Cindy Crawford, their
consumer affairs manager.
Finally I wrote to the president of GE. Of course I didn't expect the
letter to reach him personally, but most big companies have high-
level customer-service people to handle these "executive inquiries".
I detailed all the calls I had made and all the broken promises,
explaining that though I knew LG had made the unit, it had GE's name
on it and I hoped they would stand behind what they had sold. To
their credit, they wrote me a check that allowed me to buy an
equivalent new unit (a Whirlpool).
I will never, never buy an LG product, whether sold under their own
name or manufactured under contract for another brand. Getting
service is just impossible.

What a story! I am a computer consultant and worked out of a tv repair shop
(rented space from them)
and I can say that LG is Zenith. I can also say that my crappy Goldstar was also
made by LG. MY unit
suddenly began turning off after running for a minute or two. I did some
research only to find that
it was common for the fan motor to stop spinning, causing the unit to turn off
after a minute. I
had the TV Shop guy order me a new motor (LG) a few months ago. Now the unit
runs but no moisture is
pulled from the air.
Anyone have an good stories of units that actually worked well?

Sure -- I've had two Whirlpool dehumidifiers running more or less continuously
in my basement for about 8 years now, with no problems at all. My other
dehumidifier just gave up the ghost this spring; it's an Admiral that I bought
in about 1988 -- used. Fan motor finally died, and I can't find a replacement.

If you're getting one for the basement, make sure its rated for low
temperature operation. Not all are.
