Hi,
I found a couple water stains on the drywall area where the 1st floor
ceiling meet outwall after heavy rain. The house is only 7 year old
and has two stories. And the wall outside is covered with vinyl
sidings. Two stains look like below 2 upstair windows. The 3rd one
has no window above it but is beneath a strip of shingle roof because
the outwall upstair is situated about a foot inwards. Could anyone
please tell me where the water might have come in and how to fix it?
Your insightful response is much appreciated.

Well, two stains might be coming from the windows, and the other from
the shingled roof area. (Why do builders have to put something like a
1 foot jog in the wall just asking for leaks? - Because people think
it just looks so cute? - Aint worth it.)
Often a flashing problem on a small roof, and a problem somewhere
around the window unit on windows.
Was this an unusually heavy or wind driven rain? Are all three
locations facing the same direction? Could be just a fluke. See if
it keeps doing it.
The fix, a knowledgeable peson to trouble shoot it, figure out on site
what it exactly is, and respond accordingly. Can't necessarily tell
you "Ah, a leak below a window - tighten your frajitz", the answer is
not always the same, its a specific response even if there are some
things more frequently than others.
Good luck
