I've been in my house for almost three years, and this week had the
septic tank pumped for the first time. They said I need to have it
replaced, and they can do it for $1250. They also said the current
tank is steel and is starting to collapse, and they want to replace
it with concrete.
They've been recommended by several neighbors so I believe they're
honest. (And for the last year or so I've noticed a slight depression
in the ground.) But I know little^H^H^H^H^H^H next to nothing about
septic tanks, so I'm not sure even what questions to ask or what I
need to know.
(1) They're going to have to dig up the yard, right? I can't imagine
how they could avoid that, but I'd feel silly if I didn't at least
ask.
(2) Pros and cons of steel versus concrete?
(3) Anything I should be sure to put in the contract, beyond haul-
away of the old tank and other debris?
(4) Other?

Concrete.
Get them to haul off the old tank.
You don't even want to touch it.

Ask if that includes permits (if needed), if there is any hazardous
waste disposal fee, and if they know what shape your leach field
is in. If the leach field has gotten debris in it, you/re in for
a major expense.
