Hi guys, I am having an issue with my sprinklers and am hoping for some
advice.  My sprinklers have not been working for quite some time and I
finally decided to take care of them.  I opened the valve and noticed the
diaphragm was partially breaking down so I got a new one, popped it in, and
screwed the top onto the valve.  I tried to electronically turn on the
sprinkler, and alas - it still didn't work.  Thinking it may be the
solenoid, I swapped solenoids with another valve which I know has worked.
Once again, no sprinkler action (the solenoid that had been in this valve
did work in the other valve btw).  Finally, I managed to get the sprinkler
to work only by opening up the aerator screw - which of course is highly
undesirable because this causes water leakage and is a manual procedure.
Anyone have any ideas as to how to get this working using the electronic
control box?

Thanks,

Bob

My first guess would be that a wire is broken somewhere between the
valve and the control box.  Second guess is that that port on the
controller is bad.

Do you have a voltage meter (cheap rat shack multimeter would work fine)
that will read 24 vac?  Check the voltage at the box,  then trace the
wires out to the valve.  My suspicion would be where all the ground
connections are spliced together.

Thanks - the weird thing is that I actually swapped solenoids (keeping
connections to each intact) with another valve and then turned on what I
thought may be a faulty solenoid and the 2nd valve turned on correctly.
That would seem to indicate it's not an electrical issue..

If by this you mean that you removed the solenoid from valve "A" and
mounted it on valve "B"  without changing any wireing and it worked
there.  Valve "B" operated when you told the controller to open valve
"A"?

If so, then something is jammed mechanically inside valve "A".  Replace
it.  Probably not worth repairing.  If you can get an identical new
valve,  it would probably be easier to just remove the guts of the old
valve and install the guts of the new one,  assuming the body is OK.
This way you don't have to undo the plumbing.  Probably not worth the
effort if the plumbing was done right.
