I need help in selecting a vacuum cleaner...

The area of our house is 1400 square feet.  The only room that has
carpeting is the master bedroom (and we'll probably change that to
hardwood).

The rest of the floors are hardwood/pergo, and the ceramic tile.

Miele is best.  You can shut off the brush motor with a switch on the handle
(depending on which model) so it's easy to go from carpet to barefloor.
It's also just as easy to swith from floor brush to powerbrush.

Just don't get it from Stan's Vacuum in Monrovia, CA because they sell you a
used model as "brand new".

I have been to Stan's and I'd like you to clarify this statement.

Have you considered a Roomba?

I think the URL is www.roombavac.com. I have one and I love it. Don't
know how I ever lived without it.

When we first got it, we were in a carpeted 1200 sq foot place. We set
the place up into two separate zones, and alternated running Roomba in
each zone every day. Worked great on carpeting and even got underneath
my dressers and bed.

Now we're in a 1900 sf house with primarily hardwood. He doesn't like
the fringes on rugs, so we roll those up before we set him loose. We
alternate rooms each day. He doesn't scratch the wood and we use him
on tile, too.

Sorry, I can't help but talk about my Roomba as if it were a "He."
