Some remnants of a wax seal (toilet) that were attached to some clothes
have now made a permanent home in my washing machine.  Can anyone
recommend a cleaner that will break up the wax but not hurt the parts in
the washing machine?

Paint thinner should remove the wax without harming anything else. DON'T do
this if there's any appliance nearby with a pilot light -- disconnect the
washer and move it to another room first.

I wouldn't even put anything flammable in any appliance. First off the
paint thinner won't mix with the water, so what good is it going to
do?It'll float on top.The agitation action of the water isn't going to
disperse it much. How much wax got in the machine? Is it getting on
your clothes or is something getting on your clothes and you're
assuming it must be the wax? If it is the wax and it's on the surface
of the inner tub, i'd look for a stain remover that is made for
clothing and use it on a rag to wipe the stuff off. If it's in the
outer tub, you're kinda out of luck there. If stuff is getting on your
good clothes, and you're sure it's the wax, i'd probably was a bunch
of old towels in hot water and soap over and over until it goes away.

Right. My washer's instruction manual is very explicit about
*never* using flammable cleaning agents in the machine. Some
paint thinners could degrade rubber seals and anything made
of plastic in the machine.

The hotter the water the better, probably. It *may* help to
add a *small* amount of a cleaner containing ammonia, since
that's common for removing floor waxes.

Multiple washes seems the tack most likely to work without
collateral damage.
