I've been reading about those $500 vacuum cleaners from England. They
say they are selling mainly through word of mouth from current users
of the machines. Do they suck so forcefully that they will pull the
individual fibers out of my carpets? Why is it that one would pay
twice as much for this vacuum instead of your everyday Hoover? Is is
considered an advantage not having a disposable dirt bag to replace
when the machine fills with lint and trash? Is the dirt container easy
to empty when filled? How about "dust" in the air while you're
vacuuming? Do you have that smell in the air you get with a standard
type upright vacuum cleaner...sort of like dust in the air where it's
sucked into the front of the vacuum, goes into the dirt collection
bag...and then the air sort of oozes out of the bag while you're
vacuuming and the house has that smell of wet dog fur wafting through
the air. If this machine does not stink up the house when you vacuum
and it does a good job...I may have to spring for the $500 and get
one!

Dyson's DC07 "Animal" rated in the middle of the pack among upright
vacuums in Consumers Report (Jan 2005). CU rated the Eureka Boss Smart
Vac Ultra (4870/4874) as a "Best Buy" at one third the price.

Go to the Dyson website and read some of the manuals. I am sticking with my
Hoover bag type (which does have a secondary HEPA filter). No dust smell
and no time consuming cleaning rituals.

Only loose fibres in new carpets (unless you've bought really awful
cheap rubbish!)

Yes

No. Dysons work by cyclone separation (the newer models have a bank of
cyclones) so the debris is dropped into a waste holding box that does
not have airflow through it. This also means that suction does not drop
off as dust box fills - suction is always brand-new empty suction.
Minor downside; they're a tad noisier than other types.
My wife's had one for several years now and would not buy any other make
(and we still have carpets without bare patches!).
Go for it Bill; get a DC04 or later model to avoid slight early teething
troubles. Prices in the UK are about GBP150 now. Be interesting to hear
prices over there. If other products are any guide, I'd expect about
USD150
