my wife wants a stainless sink instead of white metal sink.

Anyone have experiences with stainless kitchen sink? like it or hate it?
some say it is hard to clean. any opinion is appreciated.

I've had almost every kind of sink and my preference is for composite
(i.e. Corian or a knockoff) for appearance, ease of cleaning, and glass
breakage resistance.  Having said that, I prefer stainless over
porcelain/iron for appearance and ease of cleaning.

Cleaning shouldn't a problem, if you regularly use soap and water to
wash your dishes you should only have to thoroughly wash out the sink
from time to time, sometimes with Soft Scrub (no bleach).  I usually do
this only when I'm expecting company <grin>.  If you are fastidious or
have really hard water you MIGHT find yourself wiping the sink down
after every use.

Be sure you get a high-quality stainless..I put a cheapo Sears stainless
sink in my outdoor wet bar and after two years it was pitting and
rusting.  It also dented easily.  Look for type 304 stainless in 18
gauge, 304 has better corrosion resistance than type 301/302.  I like
the mid-grade brands such as Kohler (warning: if you install new
faucets, don't buy Kohler faucets - buy Moen One Touch - they are great
and have a lifetime warranty against leaks and corrosion).  Also be sure
the sink has sound deadening foam on it, or you can use an expanding
foam like Great Stuff and create the same sound-deadening effect.  When
you install it DO NOT use caulk to fix the sink to the counter.  Use
plumber's putty so that you can remove the sink later if you need to.

While we are on the topic.... consider two different sizes for the bowls
(i.e. medium/big).  You have more room in the big bowl for big pots and
pans - I use this all the time to submerge big skillets.  If you use a
dish rack in the sink then be sure to mount your garbage disposal on the
side of the sink without the dish rack.

An example of a self-rimming split bowl design with three hole cutouts
(faucet, soap dispenser, water filter):

Plan on spending $500 on the sink, $200 for a One Touch faucet.  And
treat yourself to a $20 soap dispenser at Home Despot.

Water spots!?  It's a sink, for Pete's sake, not a Ming vase.

What difference do water spots make?
