This must be the ultimate week for Frugalers: the week after Christmas.
I went walking my dog thru the local alleys. I saw a small tv and a dvd
player for the taking. Don't know if they worked, but I'm sure many
functional tvs, etc., are being discarded this week.

I got a pile of clothes yesterday and 2 good chairs a couple of days
ago.

I think we'd have better luck perusing Craiglist "free" or "household"
section for these recently replaced items. Not sure I'd want a DVD
player that was tossed into an alley. I think it'll be a better week
for thrift stores; I know I'm going to start documenting and boxing up
my donations (dang those lawmakers and their vague charity donation tax
laws).

I walk three mornings a week, rain or shine, and find a ton of stuff.
This morning I found a HP Pavilion f1503 flat panel monitor in pristine
condition laying atop a pile of trash bags on the curb. I'll bet 59
cents that it works perfectly. Someone got a new 20" monitor for
Christmas and just tossed the old one.
I just need a couple of cables....<g>.

One of the universities here has a classified section on their website,
students and faculty are the only ones who can post, but everyone can
read them. It is fascinating to read them as the end of term comes
near, or even after Christmas. All these kids and "I got this $500 parka
for Christmas but I have one already" or even "I bought this $500 parka
two years ago but never really wore it because it doesn't fit right...".
Or "I got this gift card for Christmas but I never buy there..." or
"I got this camera for Christmas but I have a better one already...".
And then when the end of term comes, all these common items that they
wil be needing wherever they move onto are sold off. Admittedly some
of those may have been bought used, and at least there is a good
chance that the buyer will be another student who may then turn around
and selling it a few years later.
It's hard to tell how much are just lures, that they figure a made
up story is better than telling the truth. But, it often does
read like so much wastefulness. If you buy something new, it is often
better to keep it than sell it off at a loss only to buy another one
later. A lot of these kids do seem to come by car, so they are
in better shape than someone flying away. And it does seem like
such a wasteful segment of society where they end up with multiple
high priced items, and end up selling them at a loss, rather than
dealing with the matter further upstream.
