Duct tape is available in about any color and commonly up to 4" wide.
I prefer the commercial grade that is twice as thick and strong as
normal hardware grade.
Tacky? I hear ya. Don't want the place looking like a mobile home

Obviously you've never been to the Ducttape Festival:
http://www.avonducktapefestival.com/
Where you can find no shortage of things made of "Duck" tape:
http://www.stuckatprom.com/contests/prom/
I don't think there a Mobile Home Park around that would let that in!

Thought the black stuff was gaffer's tape -- used to stick down wires and

It's good for patching those cheesy blue tarps -- they both fall apart at the
same time :-) I remember reading an article that said that, while duct tape
was good for a lot of things, taping ducts together wasn't one of them.

Stronger, matte, waterproof, and just better in every way. Some day, when all
the grey and red and blue tape has been used up, I'm going to splurge and buy
a roll.
