Or not. Yesterday our refrigerator quit so we looked in the paper for sales
on appliances. Home Depot looked promising so we went out there. We liked
the Maytag, so we asked how soon it could be delivered. Two weeks on most
brands and three on a Maytag. You got to be kidding. Who can wait three
weeks for something like a refrigerator? I can see if you are building a
new house or remodeling--but to replace most appliances?? Yeah, sure, we'll
live out of a cooler for three weeks. So, we went over to Lowes, found one
we liked and it was delivered today at noon.
Even items like washers and dryers--someone with a house full of kids isn't
going to wait weeks if their washer or dryer conks out. A dishwasher maybe,
and a stove, maybe--if you have a microwave, but a refrigerator? No
freaking way.

This is getting to be a more common story. I had to replace my
built-in microwave at Thanksgiving. I looked all over the Twin Cities
and could not find anyone that stocked anything other than the most
basic models. I ended up having to wait 3 weeks for Home Depot to
order one in from Chicago. I could have had one in 3 days if I went
to one of the appliance dealers and paid about 50% more, plus paid
$150 for delivery and installation. In my case, I'd rather wait the
extra time and get a much better deal. With the economy having taken
a hit and building having slacked off, stores are simply not stocking
the bigger ticket items like they used to.
