we were recently dropped by "Drive America" for using road services too
often. they just dropped us and didn't notify us.
Is there a better deal ? AAA only tows 5 miles. $45 a yr.
can we do better?

It's amazing what you can do. If...
you put your mind to it.

My insurance company is Progressive. With roadside coverage, they tow
15 miles. I actually had them tow me once from 18 miles and there was
no extra charge.
I have a trusted car mechanic, and I know they are hard to come by. I
have never had to make the call, but I would rather pay my own tow
charges to get the car to him than to use the insurance to tow to a
stranger.
It would be nice to have a policy that would tow the car to your home
town. I know that would be unrealistic. 25 miles would be a little
better comfort zone.

AAA plus will tow 100 miles. That is what I have. They will tow it
wherever you want within 100 miles. I have used it twice in the past two
years. First I was about 20 miles from home and the car simply stopped.
I called AAA and they were there in less than a half hour and they towed
the car to my trusted mechanic. The camshaft position sensor failed
which is a fatal error.
Then not long after that the other car also simply quit 110 miles from
home. Both cars are low mileage, not old and well maintained so you
never know. For the second time AAA towed it off the expressway to a
local garage. A state trooper who stopped gave us a ride to the hospital
where I was taking a family member and AAA gave me the number of the
garage. I called the garage and gave him a heads up that I would like
the car brought home. By the time we got back to the garage he had a
driver ready to go and he dropped the car off at my mechanic and dropped
off the family member and then me at home. The only problem I had was
that AAA said you only get one tow/day. I asked for a supervisor and
explained what had happened and she agreed to cover the second tow.

Actually, I just renewed my AAA membership for an upcoming cross
country road trip. Basic membership is $73/year for the primary
member and $35/year for each associate member (who must be an
immediate family member). Roadside assistance calls are limited to 4
per membership year, and towing is limited to the first four miles
from the breakdown. Towing can be increased to 100 miles with a
"Plus" membership, but annual dues go up to $124/$73. Many, many more
benefits than just breakdown service though.
They all limit calls and towing, and are getting more limited with the
decline of the economy. If you need roadside assistance that often
you need a better mechanic, or a better car more than you need a
breakdown service.

If you need more frequent road service, you seriously need to consider
increasing the preventive maintenance you do on your car or buy a
different car.
