I have a Braun series 1 190 electric razor and the foil screen has worn a
hole on one side. Sure didn't last very long. From what I can find on-
line the foil and cutter costs almost as much as a new razor in Walmart.
Hard to pin down the right part. They don't seem to identify them the
same as the razor markings.
Anyhow, if I'm going to replace it might as well try to find a better
one. The Braun is ok but far from outstanding. Not a very good shave.
Previously I had a rotary Norelco. Unlike Norelcos I had when I was
younger it was very bad. Very poor shave.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good razor they bought recently? Maybe
I should just grow a beard but I'm concerned about existing photo ids
like driver's license. I can easily visualize an arrogant cop giving me a
hard time. If I use a blade I bleed annoyingly.
TIA

My suggestion is to find another way to shave ;-) I've tried four
different top-quality electric shavers during my lifetime and have never
achieved anything better than a close cropping. After fair trials, I
passed the first three off to various movie-biz makeup folks.
A few months ago, I bought a top-line Remington, the second-ranked
model in the most recent Consumer Reports comparison. It is rated
marginally behind the Braun at about half the retail price. The
replacement cutter-screen kit is priced about about two-thirds the
razor's price. After about six weeks I gave up. No way can what that
sucker leaves behind be called a "shave". This one, I'm mailing to DW's
son so that he may discover whether it's useful on his head; neither of
us is optimistic but, what the heck, it's paid for....
At any rate, I'm back to the secondhand cut-throat straight razor
for which I paid six bucks back in the '70's. For many years, it was the
most frugal way to shave but nowadays I pay collector's prices for cup
soap and four-or-five years ago I paid a custom maker $100 for a
replacement for a brush about which I felt extravagant paying $25 in the
late '70's. Expensive, yes, but I expect the razor and the brush to
outlive me -- to what end, I cannot imagine. The lowest-priced usable
grocery store disposables are over a buck each and are good, at most,
for one shave so, if I live long enough, I guess I'll break even on the
deal. In the meantime, I get a _great_ shave. Plus I enjoy the daily
discipline of having to do at least one thing absolutely "right".

I bought a Panasonic wet/dry shaver earlier this year just to see if
there was an electric shaver that actually works. I use it in the shower
and it does a great job.

Put a slice of tape (electrical if you have it) over it (the part with
the hole). You'll get a lot more shaves out of it, in fact it will
probably last much longer than the time it took to wear the hole.
Doesn't seem to affect the quality of the shave. Not my idea, but it is
one I've been following since I was shown...

I've used a Panasonic "linear motor" shaver for many years. Works
well, lasts 2 weeks on a charge, blades last a long time (2+ years).
