I noticed a lot of crab apples and abandoned apple trees going to waste
in our area. So I built an apple press and barter for half the juice.
this year I'm adding resources for one to make something a little more
alcoholic. a starter kit.
after all.

Very smart. Canned applesauce, canned apple pie filling, cider, hard
cider.... the possibilities are great.
My next door neighbor has been going to various pick your own places for
years. She knew every place that had a pear or apple tree and the farms
that have a pick your own strawberry field.
Every year she would process quite a lot of free produce that way.
Her husband hunts, and there is always plenty of venison and wild turkey on
hand in their freezer.

Good deal. When I was a kid, there were huge apple and peach orchards in
the next town (in fact, when my mom was young, she worked in the packing
house after school) but by the time I was grown, most of them had been
replaced by subdivisions. In my 20s, there were about 10 trees left in
one corner that hadn't been redeveloped - these were trees that hadn't
been sprayed with pesticides in probably 10-15 years - so I went over one
fall with Maisha and we got enough apples (Stayman Winesaps, no less -
this wasn't an orchard of boring varieties!) to make a really awesome
pie.
Out here in Hawaii... not so many apples. Climate's not right. Plenty
of other fruit just falling off trees along the road, though!

Aren't there any food banks in your area? Most are thrilled to receive
fresh produce.

Yep, there are, and I'm sure they would have welcomed any brought in.
And they may have gotten some, I don't know -- I suspect the gating
item was availability of free/willing labor to harvest them.
We regularly take some of our excess eggs to the local food bank and
they are always happy to get them.
