Adds say file electronicly for free , saves millions of dollars , fast
returns.
Well if you look into it there are limitations and restrictions.
I just finished using turbo tax and clicked on electronic filing and it
says $16.95.
Who gets that fee? Is the IRS getting any of it? If it is such a great
thing why are there restrictions on who can use it??
I never have and never will pay to pay to my income tax!

Every year I post a rant about the IRS not providing a free, official
filing website.
Electronic filing is cheaper than paper for the IRS. It's a simple case
of intentional government inefficiency in order to create/preserve a
business opportunity for the filing services.
Even my po-dunk state government has an official free filing website.
It's nothing fancy, and it works just fine.

Nope, just another example of a mindless bureaucracy
that couldnt organise a pissup in a brewery.

And the IRS cant even manage something as basic as that.
There's plenty of state bureaucracys that dont have free online license renewal
etc even tho that is cheaper to administer than the traditional approach.
No conspiracy, just more mindless bureaucratic terminal stupidity.

Actually there is a conspiracy, it's called the Free File Alliance.
It's an industry group of tax filing companies dedicated to thwarting
the obvious (an IRS filing site) in order to save their gravy train.
They do this by letting poor people file for free, except that of course
their "free" services are laden with spam, lock-ins, hidden fees, and
privacy problems. And, yes, the IRS would have their own site if not
for this special interest lobbying group.

That aint a conspiracy, just another self interested group.

Doesnt make it a conspiracy.

Easy to claim. Hell of a lot harder to substantiate that utterly mindless claim.
The reality is that its a lot easier for the IRS to farm it out.
