I'm moving in about 3 weeks and have been getting some astounding
quotes from the reputable movers in the area in the range of $2-3,000.
I have abou 5 rooms in an apartment but nothing very fragile or
valuable. Mostly bulky light stuff and books. I think I'm paying these
movers for their professionalism when I really need some grunts to hall
these boxes for 4 or 5 hours. I'm too old to call on friends to help
out since back problems and family obligations abound. I was thinking
of renting a 22-26 foot truck and using the Emove.com service to rent
some hourly movers on either side of the move. It might be a little
difficult to schedule the logistics but maybe I could have 3 guys pack
the truck on a Friday and drive it myself to my new place then have the
other guys unpack the next day. Can anyone poke any holes in this
scheme?

I've moved several times for not too much. I box everything up so it is all
ready to go. Then I rent a truck...
Then I go find helpers. In some large cities there are places where workers
stand around waiting for work. Just drive up and hire a few. If migrant
workers, be sure at least one worker speaks English. Or find a youth center
which has teenagers sitting around - ask if anyone wants to help you move.
Or go to an employment department and ask those waiting in line if they want
some work. Homeless shelter, etc. These people appreciate the work.
(Teenagers are not very eager to work sometimes though...)
Best to take the workers to lunch and buy them all they can eat. This is
hard work, so provide them with something to drink and tell them to take a
break every so often. Treat the workers good and they will treat your stuff
good. Also these people don't usually have their own transportation, so best
to offer to drive them home after they are done or drive them to a bus stop
or whatever.
