Its been a while since we all went carrier-free, switching to MCI (and
now $.99 store/Wildgate) phone cards or cellphones for our
long-distance calling. We've thankfully avoided the 10xxx dial-around
carriers, and have enjoyed 5-plus years of slam-free, cram-free, almost
predictable phone bills.
But my folks are beyond the age of dialing an extra 20 digits per call.
So they've kept Bill Whitacre in clover, as they subscribe to an AT&T
"basic long distance weasel plan", which changes colors and rates every
90 days with the 18-page foldout of fine print sent with the bill.
Mom is pretty sharp when it comes to stretching a dollar, but she's
wearing thin - just plain tiring of battling with the tactics of Ma
Bell.
And so I ask - is there any subscribable long distance carrier that has
a 5-year track record for not gouging or playing tricks, with a
sensible fee structure? (i.e. $1-2/month for dial-1 access, $.15/minute
flat-rate, included in monthly AT&T(SBC) bill).
Thanks!

Jeff:
When I used a calling card, I put it on my phone's automatic dial
feature.
It takes 2 spaces:
#1: The company connect number, and then once connected enter
#2: The card number.

Jeff,
I haven't used this carrier for 5 years but I want to tell you
that I've saved a significant amount of money by using this carrier. They
have the lowest long distance rate of any carrier (that I know of.) Their
is no monthly fee at all if you get your bill sent via email. The rates are
¢2.7 for long distance and ¢2.6 for local long distance. The company name is
Pioneer Telephone and their customer service telephone number is:
1-888-492-6878
Mon-Fri 9 A.M. to 8 P.M. EST. I hope this helps
Here is their web address

Get 'em a programmable phone and/or preprogram the numbers in OneSuite
I dail 20# for an access number, then another two digit number for a
particular person or company. Reminds me of the old days when local
calls were only four digits or less.

I use GTC Telecom.
3.9 cents a minute for long distance
No fees if you pay by credit card.
I have used them for 8 years without any problems.
