I live on my own and dont use much hot water in the summertime. I have
a boiler & seperate hot water tank system for central heating and hot
water. Also have an electric shower.

In the a.m I only really need hot water for shaving. The elec. shower
doesnt need a hot water supply.
Getting home from work I only need a bit of hot water for washing
dishes etc.

My question is: rather than have the boiler on for 1 or 2 hours per
day, would I be better off just boiling a kettle instead?

I reckon I'd only boil about 2 pints of water, 3 times per day.

A frugal solution fails to be frugal when it is so inconvenient that you
neglect to use it.  You need hot water on tap, so that you just turn the
faucet and there it is.  Otherwise, you are going to waste a lot of time
waiting for water to boil, and give up on that plan QUICK.

I'd suggest you install a tankless water heater (smallest one you can find)
under your kitchen sink.  These things are efficient enough to heat water
instantly (no preheating/storage required).  You could even run your shower
off of one, although it sounds like your shower might have one already?

If I understood your post correctly, the shower heats it's own water.  So
you need hot water for washing dishes, and hot water for shaving, and ???

A tankless water heater sounds perfect for you.  I'd suggest putting it in
the kitchen, although you could put it on the HW supply line for the kitchen
sink and the bathroom sink (where you shave) if the two sinks are not far
apart.  If the tankless water heater is in the kitchen, you could shave in
the kitchen, or just haul some hot water from the kitchen to the bathroom.
It would be much more trouble to wash dishes with hot water from the
bathroom, obviously.  :)  -Dave
