Inlaws told us about this great source for inexpensive eyeglasses at one
of our favourite haunts. This is similar to an indoor flea market where
vendors set up booths, selling mainly new items or services. There is
an antique section. It is one of the best places to buy craft supplies.
Each weekend they have events like a computer show or similar where
you can get some really good deals. They are only open Friday, Saturday,
and Sunday.
Anyway, the inlaws had bought eyeglasses for $18! They kept raving
about the service for so little price. This booth has been there for a
couple of years but I thought it was too good to be true. One of our
kids (close to being legally blind) needed new glasses so went there and
loved the result declaring the new glasses to be of equal quality as the
old pair. This kid buys contacts online cheaper than at a b&m store.
We don't have eyeglass coverage and OHIP no longer pays for eye exams
($85 CAD). When DH needed his first pair of glasses recently, he went
there too and has been very pleased. I inquired and the very *same*
contacts I pay $90 CAD are only $25 US, more than half price! They will
make up glasses with new frames for $18 or replace the lens in your old
frames for $18. You need a valid prescription 2 yrs old or less for
glasses and preferrably a yr old or less for contacts. There is a nice
selection of frames for both adults and children. You can upgrade to
more expensive frames, the highest price I saw was $40, if you choose.
Scratch resistant coating is $5. Anti-glare coating is $5. A nice case
is $2. Coatings and case are optional. The cost for sunglasses is the
same. I have an eye exam later this month; my eyeglasses run in the
$300 range here. Needless to say I'm going there for my glasses. I
curious how they can keep prices so low? I realize they have lower
overhead but then they are only open 3 days a week except for Christmas
shopping days. The price difference seems too great to be explained
simply by low overhead. Any ideas?
