That is not as silly as it sounds. Nearby, we have a local primary
school that keeps some farm animals such as sheeps and goats.
Occasionally, I would borrow either a sheep or a goat for it graze in
our yard. It certainly keeps the weeds down! There are some problems
with this, the scrubs also gets eaten and the droppings are messy.
The local school likes this as their animals seems to live longer due
to a changing environment, well that is what they tell me anyway.

If you're going to bother killing weeds, one of those spiky-forked blades on a
handle
for cutting the roots below ground level would be frugal since it's a one-time
cost.
For me, if it doesn't make me itch, it's not a weed and I just let it grow as
part of
my lawn diversity program.
