I googled this, but could not find anything on point.

I am going abroad and when I return I will return to a new city to live
in, but I will not know which city until shortly before I return to the
USA.

I have about 5-6 boxes, roughly 35 lbs each, roughly 30 inches max
length that I need to have moved from my old city to my new home in
another USA city. Mostly it is papers, valuable only to me. I will
need to arrange the move when I am already in my new city, issuing
directions from that city long distance.

I am thinking of storing them at one of these storage locker places in
my old city and then having a cabbie or personal assistant pick them up
and drop them to either Greyhound or UPS or FedEx (prepaid shipping).
I do not have anyone I know in my present location that can pick up the
boxes at the storage place and deliver them to the shipping company, so
I will have to hire someone to do this.

Preliminarly checking looks like the shipping cost is going to be around
$100 plus the cost of the delivery person.

Has anyone tried a similar method who can advise if this is a good idea
or not (and the reasons) and how to best plan it out? FedEx is probably
my first choice for a carrier, but also looking at UPS and Greyhound.

You didnt google it very effectively.

Googling this newsgroup alone would have turned up a number of hits.

You should be able to find a storage place that will do that for you.

Think about it before you begin:
5 boxes
x 30 inches/box
x 200 pages/inch
x 15 seconds/page
x 1 minute/ 60 seconds
x 1 hour / 60 minutes
= 125 hours of scanning

It could be done in three or four weeks if the OP has time.
