I know this is OT for the group, but there are some smart folks who
know networking that frequent MCFL.  I ran into this problem today:

A program that uses mapping and was running fine for months suddenly
cannot access files across the TCP/IP peer-to-peer network running
under Windows XP home.  No changes in the configuration of the network
occurred between yesterday and today.

Permissions are set properly on the file serving computer, and another
computer on the same network successfully accesses the files.

The computer names on the network are unique.
The workgroup name is exactly the same.
Re-boots have been tried.
A ping to the network name of the file serving computer fails.
A ping to the IP address of the file serving computer works -
(192.168.0.103) pinged from 192.168.0.102, access time <1ms).
Mapping of the C: drive of the file serving computer appears to be
successful, and a DIR command across the network works, but any
attempt by a program to access the files returns a device unavailable
error.  Again, another computer on the network has no problem
accessing the same files.

Something is obviously screwy on the computer with the local net
address of 192.168.0.102, but I'm at a loss as to what it is.

Any leads or suggestions?

you using a router?
how olds the router?
is it used to share a broadband/DSL connection?
has the broadband/DSL connection been acting up on it?

No, this connection is straight across a hub.

There is a BB connection, but only on the one computer that is acting
up.  It isn't shared.  The issue is strictly with the peer-to-peer
file sharing.

FWIW, no.

If you're trying to get to a database make sure the ODBC map hasn't
(inadvertently) been changed.

If you're running DHCP you might try refreshing the IP lease for the
'puter having problems.  Issue "ipconfig release/all" and "ipconfig
renew" at the command prompt.

Nope. That isn't the issue.

I did a couple of complete re-boots, so I don't think that will help,
but I'll shoot that as well.  Thanks.
