Oil change

 Is there a rule of thumb as to how often I should take the car in to
have it done?

I drive only one day a week and not very far.

The manual will tell you what the manufacturer recommends. Thats conservative.


That type of use does need a higher than usual oil change frequency,
because the car doesnt get enough use to boil off the combustion
products condensate so the oil does tend to get quite acidic.

is a factor in addition to the low mileage. And short drives can be
hard on the engine oil. My vote is to change the oil twice a year in
your situation and you will be fine. Your mileage is probably so low
that any supposed increased wear from less frequent changes will never
play out in any increased cost to you. You could also change the oil
twice a year, but only change the filter once per year and you would
also be fine.
Regardless of what you do, check the oil regularly and keep it topped
off. Same with all fluids.
