It seems that June 1st is the date when one has to apply or get a new
passport or card they call it to travel to canada, some carribean isle
and etc. and charge $75 for it to $100. Now, I got a passport 4 years
ago when i went to Italy. They said it was good for 6 years. I went to
the gov website and there it seems one has to renew it for a fee of
$75. Boy, with the economy the way it is, the gov really knows how to
hike prices during these times for almost everything. ..subways in
NYC, water tax, real estate tax and etc...talk about bleeding us to
death..

I got my US passport 2 years ago, and it is good until 2017. I'm
not sure why you got only a 6 year one.

Regardless, whatever the years, apparently does not prevent you from
paying extra fees on them, according to what I heard..Now, I may be
wrong, that is why I posted here to see if someone else knows more.
The web site for this does not mention if existing passports are
included or not.

I think the OP just misunderstood the requirements. According to what I
just read, the United States is not invalidating anyone's passport
early, so he should be fine when returning to the United States with his
old passport as long as its not expired.
