Now at my local post office the workers have been trained not to offer "parcel
post" unless it's asked for.  If you present them with a package they give the
price for 2cd day air and for priority.  If you don't know that parcel post
service exists you'll have to pay for priority..

The family owned pharmacy in my neighborhood added a postal
sub-station last year. They do everything a post office does (They even
have to wear USPS shirts) except for postal money orders (not sure if
this is postal rule or because they already sell money orders) and
anytime I send a package they always tell me all the options. Unlike
USPS they want their customers to know their options.

Those can be a good alterative.. most of the time they seem better but I've been
to one that had a bad scale and tried to charge much more.  It was in old run
down pharmacy run by older people on the verge of death or retirement.

I would have to go out of my way to go to a postal sub-station now though, I can
walk to the main branch in town.

I hate going the way they always give you the hard sell now.  I see a lot of
people paying for second day air though.  Is that post office totally private
now?  If so they should not have any privileges that Federal entities have.

This one decided not to fold up when  Walgreens came in a block away.
They  started offering free delivery and their prices often beat the big
store.
The Postal Service is a hybrid, no tax money but still a quasi-public
thing.
