Looking at the prepaid comparison chart
(http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm ), looks like Page Plus
Cellular might be my best bet. But their web site doesn't inspire much
confidence. Anyone have experience with them? Purchase phones on ebay
or whatever?

I don't know what extra features you need or want, but I have been using
Virgin mobile for about a year now and find them to be a very good
prepaid provider. Their minutes roll over from one recharge or /top-up/
to the next so no wasted money.

I selected Virgin Mobile also after checking the areas that I might
need access. I don't make many calls, so my account balance is growing.

Same here.
I read somewhere that Virgin Mobile is probably the best option for folks
who don't make lots of phone calls.

If Verizon works for you, imo, Page Plus is a lot cheaper (about half the
cost) as Virgin.  Just a satisfied customer.
