Six of one, half dozen of the other. Choose your mental poison. From

At the university where I work (on the east coast), cell phones, pdas,
and laptops are banned during exams. Some instructors also ban those
devices during lectures, not only exams because of the distractions the
pose.
My university also subscribes to an online service that scans students'
essays and reports signs of plagiarism. I am an administrator, not an
instructor, but from what I heard, this service is very effective. The
name of the service escapes me at the moment though.
Cheating is taken as a very serious offense where I work. Years ago,
when I was a teaching assistant at the same east coast university, how
individual cheating incidents were dealt with depended on the instructor
involved. Now, there's more uniformity.
I worked for one instructor who has a national following (even appearing
on Letterman a few times) who didn't care if his students cheated. He
said that any student who cheated was doing themselves more harm than he
could ever do by pursuing a disciplinary action. Another instruct in the
same department made it his life's work to see that anyone who cheated
in his class was booted out of school entirely ... and both instructors
taught a different instructor of the same courses.

When I was a teen in the late 70's, I had a close friend who loved to
shop lift. He was not a cleptamaniac. My friend intentionally stole
small items from stores because he got a kick out of challenging the
stores' security systems. Not once did my friend ever get caught. He
eventually graduated with very good grades and got into the ROTC and
became an Air Force officer, although he now works in private industry.
On the other hand, my dad's best friend once got caught shop lifting
and he got in a heap of trouble as a result.

As for family restaurants, there are tons of them. You didn't say what
price range you have in mind, but check http://www.chowhound.com to see
what they recommend. My favorite restaurant in Philly for Italian is
Ralph's, which is the oldest family owned Italian restaurant in the
United States. The food there is fantastic, but bring cash. Ralph's
does not accept credit cards. Ralph's is located on 9th Street in
South Philadelphia around Catherine Street; its a brief walk from
South Street.

Good point. If I had the choice, I would prefer the odor of the most
pungent fart over the stench from cigarette smoke. Fart oder dissipates
quickly. Cigarette smoke's onder takes days to dissipate.

I completely agree. There are two key ways to avoid unemployment. First,
you need to be better at your job (once you find one) than anyone else
and you need to make sure your employer knows about it. Second, you need
to keep looking for a job even after you find a job you like. This way,
the odds are lower that your employer will want to lay you off, although
it can still happen, and if your employer lays you off, you have options
already in front of you.
The OP should try some way to excel in his field that few, if any,
others have done. I managed to achieve that objective and now, if my
employer fires me and outsources my IT job, I already have options lined
up in front of me. I admit, the situation may be different in other
areas, but in IT, those who sit back and do nothing, or just the
minimum, are at the greatest risk of being outsourced.
Getting a job is half the battle, keeping it is the other half.

Philadelphia Federal Credit Union offers this service free for major

I agree, such behavior is rude. McDonalds is marketing itself more as a
playground and toy store than as a fast food place. Witness all the toys
and indoor play areas at McDonalds. Burger King does this too. Parents
are raising their kids to be rude. Your best defense is to eat elswhere,
such as Wendy's or KFC when you want a quiet fast food meal without the
playground atmosphere.
