Something the US should seriously consider. If we still had debtor's
prisons, we would not be in a complete financial meltdown right now.

Why?
If I owe you money, how does having The State snatch me up and throw me
in jail help you in the least?

In theory it does discourage some from ending up not being able to repay debt.

The same way a life sentence/the death penalty helps me if you murder
me.
The key concept here is "deterrence."
