I've recently replaced my set of 4-Altec Lansing desktop speakers due
distorted sound from the sub-woofer crapping out . I'm wondering if
there's another use for, or way to convert the perfectly good 4 surround
speakers for independent use on something else, like one of the TVs without
needing the defective sub-woofer control unit....or should I just trash
everything? Thanks

I'd trash them. If your speakers are like all of the various models I've
owned (some Altec-Lansing), then the amplifier is in the sub-woofer module.
Without that, you'd need an external amp. And, that external amp. would
have to be capable of driving speakers with extremely low impedence (like, 2
Ohms or lower). Such a thing exists, but they are expensive. OH, and you
use the wrong amp, and the amp will disintegrate. :(
Even if you have a TV that can drive external speakers, I wouldn't recommend
trying it. If the TV amp gets damaged, the INTERNAL speakers might be
useless. -Dave

I agree just trash them. But before you do open the cases and see if the
magnets can be removed and put to use somewhere else like the garage for
picking up / holding onto little metal screws etc.

Thanks guys. The feedback was just about what I thought it would be but
now I know for sure.

You can turn them into "telephones" by hooking them together with
some wire, talk into one of the speakers and your voice will come out
of the other speaker at low volume.
