Looks like I may have to buy a new one, unless it recovers after this 112+
weather here for a week or so now. Any brands I should stay away from? My
old GE has run faithfully for over 15 years, preceded by a GE that only
lasted a few years before its compressor died. Don't know how good they are
now.
TIA

I love, love, love our GE side by side. It is a little over a year old. We
had a Frigidaire that lasted about two months past it's warranty date but
didn't bother getting it fixed because I hated the design. The bottom
basket on the freezer side kept coming off the tracks and the ice-maker kept
getting frozen up and clogging and was difficult to take out to dump and
difficult to put back in. The GE has a much better shelf design and works
great. The ice-maker in the GE actually recognizes when the tub is full and
quits producing more ice until more is needed--unlike the Frigidaire.

The new energy star refrigerators should reduce your electric bill.
I don't think that the brand is too important.
You might want to skip the icemaker feature to reduce your costs and
repair problems. Stainless steel increases your cost without providing
much benefit.
I think that bottom freezer models are the best style and french doors
can help in a cramped kitchen.

I totally agree about the stainless. White has been with us forever,
stainless steel will be next year's Harvest Gold.

I'd have to give a vote to a sort of mottled black/grey/light grey
finish for floors, walls, appliances... The "fingerprint-hostile" white
finish of 10 years ago isn't really.

Is there really a big difference in efficiency between top- and
bottom-freezer models?
