I have several heavy cotton shirts that unfortunately have visible wear on
the edges of parts of the collar and the cuffs. Any way to cover/hide this?
Otherwise shirts look fine. I hate to discard them and buy expensive
replacements out of my meager capital.

Unfortunately, I am a senile old male, totally unskilled in sewing, so my
task is probably impossible.

But perhaps... Surely I am not the first guy with this problem.

You can make new collars and cuffs, but that not a trivial exercise for someone

It isnt that hard to learn how to sew, and you can get
very viable sewing machines for peanuts at yard sales.

Corse you arent, but not many do anything much about it except buy new ones.

Well, if they are solid colors, you could try dying them.

I just use mine as rags around the house.  With the cost of new shirts being
so low, why bother to repair.    Those worn shirts can be used for other
practical things round the home I figure...

Back in the old days (before my grandmother), women would turn collars

Yard sales, estate sales, thrift stores.  If the image fits, you might
try overcasting the edges with contrasting colored embroidery thread or
yarn.
