I'm buying a home, and the lot is 1/2 acre. There are some trees on
the property, but there's a lot of lawn.
People have been telling me that, for 1/2 acre lot, to not cheap out
and be sure to get a riding mower. Thing is, the cheapest riding mower
is about $400 more expensive than the best self-propelled gas walk-
behind.
I should also mention that I live in the South where summers are hot
as heck. If a riding mower would be quicker, maybe it's worth the
expense? For many days in the summer, you really don't even want to be
outside it's so hot; and that's coming from someone who likes the
outdoors.
Anyway, I'm interested in hearing peoples' opinions on riding mower
vs. self-propelled gas. The larger the property, the more it prob.
makes sense to get a riding mower. I seem to be on the borderline with
a 1/2 acre.
Thanks.

The advantage of the SP mower is you're getting exercise; you can also
maneuver around things and closer than with a RM. Not sure if the
heat is even an argument here because you won't really be using your
own muscle with the SPM. Now you could go super frugal and just get a
small herd of goats to keep it neatly mowed :-p

The problem with the goats is that the neighbourhood dogs will kill
them so that's hardly a fun approach.
If you don't buy a ride on mower you'll regret not paying a bit extra
every time you wheel out the ordinary mower, which in the heavy
growing part of the year will be every day. The thought of getting
exercise will soon vapourise out of your head when you realise how
much bloody grass you have to chew through.

Get a riding mower ... "mower" fun to use, it can pull a trailer for
clean up, take the blades off and go racing, ...

It's amusing to see people using riding mowers (on 1/4 - 1/ 2 acre
lots) pay to belong to a gym.
Reminds me of back when I coached soccer at a local Y. It was amusing
to see all the Mercs, etc parked illegally near the entrance with the
irony being that if they would walk from the lot, they probably wouldn't
need to pay for exercise.
