So are you saying the links that come through regular Usenet newreader
posts are safer? I read the article the OP was referencing in my
local newspaper; it was about very drug resistant strains of staphy*
infections. So I didn't need to click the link.

No, that when you can see where its going, you can decide for yourself
what the risk with it is likely to be. You cant with a blog etc.

I see...thanks for the clarification. But I agree...have to be
cafeful about links; the latter one added by someone else was to the
chicago tribune so not likely harmful.

No. But I'm at Google now. I'm too big of a sissy to click on any
links that I don't know about or have never heard of. Instead, I'll
just google the topic and go to a website that is safest. Takes a
little longer, but gets me to legitimate websites. Nothing's
assured. Folk are out to get us. Yadda Yadda.
How about this? A summary of what's in the link would save everyone
time and energy, and the ensuing discussion would make more sense to
those of us who don't want to go bashing around to links.
