I followed up with these people earlier this year. Here is the
assignment they wanted to gave me.
Go to an ice cream place across town (20-30 minute car drive plus, at
the very least a dollar for a meter/45-60 minutes on public transit
involving at least three lines).
Get on line to oder a sundae. Note if the greet mentions the special.
Send them a report and get reimbursed for the sundae and "up to $5
extra".

It can be a good way to make a little money if you live in a downtown area.
I used to do it.

I've done quite a few mystery shops but you're correct, you will make a
"little money" but not much. When my kids were younger we'd be sent to
Chevy's around here, I was to buy up to $50 and that would be
reimbursed. But there was no "cash" reimbursement except the cost of
the meal. Other shops I did were for fast foods (my favorite was doing
a shop against a FF seafood company I used to be a manager of...luckily
I didn't go to any of the stores I used to manage) and that would net a
cheap meal and $12. Last, some didn't require any purchase at all or
very minimal ($5 max) like the Disney store or some ladies clothing
store for anorexics where the max size is 5. Those would get about
$15. If you're good, concise and prompt you'll get more offers and
"better" offers, so that could be lucrative. Great for someone with a
very flexible schedule. Keep in mind they do send 1099 forms at the
end of the year so it's not "under the table" money.

I know people who have done it and the pays was more than $5.
By the way, the locale they wanted was no where near downtown.
