We just bought half a dozen decent 2.5-2.8 MHZ computers for $2 each at a yard
sale. Add a HD and they're up and running. We're already running five
general-purpose computers and don't see a need for another, as well as one used
as a music server. The computers are too nice to NOT be used, we just cant
figure out a good USEFUL dedicated application for them.
Any ideas?

Needy neighbourhood families? Our workplace still uses pentium 1.8 for
everyday operations and my boss has replaced two of them this year and
donated the the replaced 1.8's to a co-worker who has little money to spend
on such items.
Nowadays kids should be handing in typed assignments or prepaed assignments
on a word processor. Any family that lacks a computer in the home is really
holding back their children's education.
So I suggest a needy well-deserved family get one of your computers....

That's an excellent idea -- in theory. There's a local charity that
refurbishes computers for just that purpose. They lament that nobody wants
anything but the newest stuff capable of playing modern games.
I suspect it's the same mechanism that makes kids on welfare wear $200 tennis
shoes.

I remember when everybody posted to Usenet with their real, deliverable
e-mail address. Of all the sins committed by the spammers, destroying
the viability of the open Internet was the worst.

Check with your local senior center. Sometimes senior citizens are happy
with a machine that can just do email and access websites.

Yeah, that's why some people "need" a living wage - for those $200 shoes.
