I'm going to have to come up with covers for @ 14 windows in a home
I'm moving into in roughly 10 days. The house has never been lived in and
and thus has never had any window coverings at all. ( no pre-existing
hardware on the windows.)Later I'll be doing curtains but for immediate
privacy I'm opting to obtain blinds. The catch: I cannot stand those cheap
plastic ones- ie: the kind that the plastic around the cord material
eventually rips.
I have had in the past nice wooden blinds but those were installed already
so I've never had to go out and shop for blinds myself. I'd welcome
suggestions of a more robust type if they're plastic or reasonably priced
if the blinds are wood. Do places like Lowe's and Home Depot carry these?
If so, are there any recommendations for types, brands, affordability, etc
from the readers of the group? Any other type of privacy window coverings
that people like and or recommend? How about ease of installation? Any
tips? Suggestions?
Thanks,
Terri

... 1" double-foil polyisocyanurate board is efficient and frugal,
cut to fit and pushed into the window frames, with a little gap at
the top edge for daylight. For south windows, be sure to paint
the side facing the glass black.

Lowe's and HD carry "cut to width" blinds in stock lengths of 64 &72
long. Since you are not looking for the cheap plastic blind, they
carry faux wood blinds, real wood blinds and aluminum blinds. Take in
your measurements and they will cut your blinds while you wait. IF
you need installation, they will also do that. Special orders could
take up to two weeks or longer.

I recently installed these cut-to-width faux wood blinds from Home Depot in
my house, and I LOVE them - they really added an updated look from the
previous aluminum mini-blinds that I had.
I thought the quality was VERY good, and an excellent value, particularly if
you install them yourself.
I purchased 10 of them, and I believe it cost me less than $400.
I installed them myself. The first one took a few hours, as I went very
slowly.
The directions could have been a little clearer, but I was able to figure it
out. (I'm a female, that normally doesn't have a lot of patience with
tedious stuff.) After the first one, they became much easier to install,
and took progressively less time.
If you like this look, I would strongly recommend these!

Hope that things are going well for you in cold country. For privacy,
there is no beating the double cell pleated blinds. They provide a
very good thermal barrier compared to most other types of blinds, look
good, and come in various colors.
