If you don't have $350 to buy MS Office with to further line Bill Gates'
pockets, then OpenOffice may be for you. It was original developed by
Sun Microsystems as StarOffice but later turned over to the open source
community for updates/revisions. It's a fully working, complete Office
suite that includes a word processor, a spreadsheet, a drawing program,
database program, and a presentation program (similar to Powerpoint).
All these programs are compatable with MS Office. MSOffice files can be
read by OpenOffice, and OpenOffice files can be read my MS Office files.
The quality of the suite is almost as good as Microsoft's, but OpenOffice
is a tad slower in opening, just a tad. OpenOffice has attractive GUI's
that look very similar to MSOffice.
Also, if you're running an older operating system like Win95,98, ME and
can't afford to upgrade to WinXP or Vista, or your hardware isn't of
sufficient specs to even be able to, you may want to consider Linux.
Linux is open-source, free. I recommend XandrOS Linus. Installing it is
simple -- takes like 15 minutes. It has an option to partition your hard
drive and install XandrOS in a separate partition and so you can keep
Windows. THat's how my PC is set-up. When I turn the PC on, after the
BIOS screens, it shows a menu where you can pick to boot either Windows
or XandrOS.
XandrOS is a fully up to date OS that looks like XP, or you can change it
to look like Macintosh or classic KDE Linux. It's a point and click GUI
OS. No command lines. And it comes with everything you need -- web
browser (firefox), email, mp3 player, media player, OpenOffice suite,
calculator, paint/drawing, digital camera capture, great games, etc. and
lots more. XandrOS recgonized ALL my hardware and networking card and
was immediately on the internet. I had tried to install other flavors of
Linux before, but none ever worked. But I found this "Linux Made Easy"
book by Grant for $25, and it included a XandrOS in the back. Plus the
book itself is a great Linux reference manual. Also, updating XandrOS is
simple, there's an "update XandrOS" link that you go to and XandrOS will
automatically scan your PC and download any updates to the OS or
components. Linux is cool.
