car tire warranty

I had my brake pads replaced yesterday by my neighbor, and he noticed a
really large bulge on the side of my left front tire.  I recall seeing a
much smaller bulge there about a year ago, but at the time didn't think it
was anything to worry about.  Now it is large enough that I'm worried it
will cause a blowout out in the middle of nowhere.

My tires are "Dayton" brand, made by Firestone.  They were advertised with
a 65,000 mile pro-rated warranty.  Although about two years have passed
since we bought the tires new, we only have 24,000 miles on them.

Unfortunately, it looks like the 65,000 mile warranty only covers the
tread.  The only other warranty is a prorated 3 year warranty.

Guess what?  There is a specific exclusion at the front of the brochure
that excludes "bulges" caused by a long list of things.

My neighbor felt that this was probably a manufacturer defect in the tire,
but with only 1 year of the 3 year warranty left, even if I successfully
argued that, I would only save about $25.

Any ideas on strategies I might try to get this tire replaced without
spending the full $80 on a new one?  If this bulge hadn't happened, I was
looking forward to having these tires on the car through at least 40k miles
of use.

     Thanks!

So what did the dealer and manufacturer offer you so far after you

When you say you noticed a smaller bulge a year ago and did nothing,
that says you don't have adequate mechanical knowledge to be working
or diagnosing your vehicle. Any bulge in a tire is indication of a
safety hazard. It might be a manufacturing defect, but more likely the
tire struck a pot hole and broke part of the steel belt. Your tire has
a hernia. Take whatever your tire source offers and replace the tire
and stop endangering your family.

This is something you should have worried about a year ago.  If you can't get
warranty replacement bite the bullet and regard the money you spend as the
price of stupidity.

Nobody needs to speak on behalf of idiots, they manage
to speak entirely too much for themselves already.

He won't find a tire shop to install a single new tire on that vehicle.
He'll have to buy a used tire, or buy TWO new tires...or install a new tire
himself.  (and I wouldn't suggest that)  -Dave
