What can be done for people in situations where the medical bills are far
exceeding their ability to pay them?
There's a lot of dismal bad-decisions backstory here, but basically these
folks have kids with chronic illnesses, and are finding themselves coming up
about
$2k a month short. The mom isn't well herself, and can't hold a job for
all the health issues of the kids. Husband earns, and makes good
overtime, but it's still not meeting their needs.
Short divorcing and mom and kids going on aid, how can these folks
get themselves out of being so hugely upside-down financially and still
provide their kids with the meds they need?

As I think that this may differ from state to state,
best thing might be to contact the State Medicaid program and ask what
help
there is for a working family with very high medical bills.
In NYS and NYC there are a lot of programs.
Eligibility rules are much more lenient for the kids then for the
parents.
