I am going to be building a new system for my parents in a month or so.
Initially, I was going to use XP, but lately I've thought that perhaps it
would be worth getting a copy of Vista for it. I got my last copy of XP at
a yard sale for $8.
I'd like to get a decent deal on Vista, but also want to make sure I'm not
getting a "grey market" copy that could come with backdoors & such built in.
I would use Linux, but after playing with Ubuntu for a while, I've decided
that while it is rock solid, it is also still too difficult for my parents
to use. (especially installing new programs)
I realize I'm not likely to get it for the $8 I got XP for at the yard
sale, but I'm guessing there must be some way to get it legally for about
$50 or so, somewhere. Can anyone recommend a place where I could get a good
deal on Vista?

I'd be glad to give you the copy of Vista that came with my Dell. I'm not
using it. Unfortunately, the license is tied to the mainboard.

How could installing software possibly be easier than in Ubuntu? It is all
in one place, all you do is a couple of mouse to clicks install and then
you're done. Not even a reboot.
Plus you have the advantage of eliminating malware. The less technically
inclined the user, the less likely they are to posses the expertise
necessary to keep a Microsoft computer from getting infected.
