Anyone here booked an international flight recently? On one recent
booking of mine the total came to $712, with $353 of that made up of
various taxes and fees.
Someone is getting very rich off this racket.

Try posting your question on the rec.travel.air group and include the
start and end points of each leg of your trip. I booked a flight from
Philadelphia to London last summer and the total taxes and fees were
around $150, as I recall. Since I used frequent flyer miles, having to
pay only $150 for a flight to Europe during the high travel season was a
bargain.

It varies a lot depending on what airline you fly (some, more than others,
have fees for every little thing), your status on that airline (frequent
flyers are often exempted from fees) and where you fly (the UK is notorious
for high taxes on flights).
I've got an itinerary coming up to Indonesia via Japan, and taxes and fees
only make up 6% of the total cost, compared to almost 50% of your example.
