See if your CATV provider offers a budget internet plan. These usually
have a speed of 768kbps to 1Mbps and run about $19.95 per month.

Do check into the DSL offerings of your phone company. If you don't
want phone service, you can delete that and have "dry line" DSL.
That may run a bit more than DSL on an active phone line, but
it should be less then the combined cost of both phone and DSL.

Lastly, look for 3rd party providers like DSL Extreme. Some of these
can undercut the phone company for DSL service.

If you want to delete the landline phone service, look into VOIP
phone service.  I recently switched to a VOIP service and
I have much better service, better features, and pay about 1/4th
as much.

For the price you are paying for Internet service, I seriously doubt you
will get a lower or comparable price for broadband service.

Well, he is looking at the big picture. He is paying a combined $39.00
per month for internet and phone.  For the same $40.00 (approx) he
can drop the phone service, get 1Mbps DSL for about $19.95, then
switch his phone service to a VoIP service like Phone Power for
about $15.00 to $20.00 per month. His total monthly outlay for
internet and phone is still around $40.00 (or less) per month.
And, he gets better phone and internet service.

AT&T has a special for their slowest DSL for $14.95 per month. This is
available as "dry loop" DSL which means you don't have to pay for a land
line.
